Mattie's World
As a kid, I was taught to respect elders; that hasn't changed for me as an adult. When my grandmother Mattie was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, my family's world was turned upside down. As she worsened, our conversations with her changed. I started photographing "Mattie's World" as a means to hold on to and connect with her and learn things about her life in more depth. I wanted the remains of the things that she owned to tell me what she could no longer. Over time, I realized I am finding connections between my life and personality and the woman I’ve only known as “Grandma Mattie”. Her life has inspired me to photograph as if I were a detective, but filled with emotions and mourning her passing.
